About MDPress

MDPress is a small, focused tool that does one job: it turns Markdown into a PDF you are happy to send to someone.

What MDPress is

MDPress is a web application that converts Markdown to PDF. You write or paste Markdown on the left and see a live preview on the right. It understands GitHub flavoured Markdown, including tables, task lists and code blocks with syntax highlighting, and it typesets TeX math with KaTeX and draws Mermaid diagrams. You can pick a document style, choose A4, A5 or US Letter, and add a cover page, a table of contents with page numbers, a logo or a signature. There is nothing to install, and you can start without an account.

Why it exists

Markdown is a pleasant way to write, and it is what AI assistants, note apps and developer tools produce by default. It is less pleasant to hand to someone who expects a finished document. The usual routes are printing a web page, which gives clumsy results, or setting up a command line toolchain, which is more than most people want. MDPress exists to close that gap. You should be able to paste your text, pick a look, and download a PDF that reads like a designed document, in well under a minute.

How a conversion works

When you press the PDF button, your Markdown and settings are sent to the server. There the Markdown is parsed into HTML, the stylesheet for your chosen style is applied, and math and diagrams are placed. A headless Chromium browser then lays the pages out and prints them to a real PDF, so the text stays selectable and searchable instead of becoming an image. If you asked for a contents page, the document is rendered a second time so the page numbers are correct. The file is sent back to you and your text is not kept.

Free software

MDPress is free software under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3. Anyone can read the source, run their own copy, change it and share the changes under the same license. That matters for a tool you paste documents into, because you do not have to take our word for what happens to your text. You can check the code. MDPress also stands on other open projects. The preview is rendered with react-markdown and the PDF is produced with md-to-pdf, which drives Chromium. The source page has the details.

Who is behind it

MDPress is an independent project. It is not part of a larger company and has no outside investors steering it. The site is paid for by a low monthly subscription for people who need unlimited PDFs, and by ads shown to visitors who use it for free. That keeps the basic converter free for everyone. Being small also means that feedback gets read and acted on. If something is broken, confusing or missing, the contact page is the best way to say so.
